We will be lodging in London, Edinburgh, and Cambridge, at university student housing.  They are modest, but clean, and well located.   They are single rooms with a bed, desk, chair, closet and  in most cases a washbasin.

We will be in London about half the time, and from there will take excursions by train to such places as Oxford, Canterbury, Dover, Bath, and Salisbury (and Stonehenge).  These are all readily accessible from London, and make nice day trips.  From Edinburgh we plan to have an excursion to St. Andrews, site of an ancient Scottish University (not to mention the legendary birth place of golf!).

Meals

Two meals per day are provided as part of the cost of the program.  Breakfast is offered with the accommodation.  A second meal will be provided,  sometimes with the whole group, and sometimes in smaller groups.  Participants are responsible for one meal a day and/or other snacks.  You may want to bring plenty of meal replacement bars with you.  We recommend $5 – 15 per day for food, depending on whether you are satisfied with picking up a piece of pizza or a bagel on the go, picking up food at the grocery store, or if you prefer to purchase a restaurant meal (some have managed on less than that, with meal replacement bars and groceries).

Cost

The cost of the trip is $3200 plus airfare.  The price includes travel in country, group excursions, lodging, 2 meals per day, as well as tuition for up to 2 courses (or 6 hours). An additional course can be taken (for a total of 3 courses, or 9 hours), with the 3rd course charged at the normal tuition rate.

For those traveling from Louisville, we will purchase the tickets in a block for the group to travel together.  We will get the best rates available at the time.  In the past they have been between $1000 and $1500 for travel out of Louisville, and less expensive from the east coast and some other major U.S. ports.

If you live outside of Louisville and will be traveling directly to London, you will be responsible for booking your own airfare.  We will be glad to advise and assist you in that process.  If you live in Louisville and prefer to book your own tickets or if you have a free ticket using airline miles, you are welcome to do that.

Additional expenses include international medical insurance (typically under $50 on our group policy), one meal each day (see above), internet access in your room (prices for this will be posted when available; in some cases you may find free wireless nearby our housing), optional free-time activities such as the theatre in London, and shopping.

Note: this trip involves a lot of walking, on a daily basis.  We will be walking at least 5 miles most days, and 8 or so miles some days (though not non-stop!).  If you have any question about whether you will be able to manage the amount of walking, please contact Dr. Magnuson (kmagnuson@sbts.edu). You can test yourself by walking on a treadmill.  You should be able to walk at a 4 mph pace for a minimum of 30 minutes.

More information will be posted as it is available, so check back for updates.  If you have specific questions, please contact Dr. Kenneth Magnuson via email: kmagnuson@sbts.eduwith ESST in the subject line.
